YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The University of Pittsburgh tennis team won its second straight match since spring break, downing Youngstown State, 4-3 earlier today at the Boardman Tennis Center in Boardman, Ohio.
"The Panthers competed hard today and closed out a strong Youngstown State team," said head coach George Dieffenbach.
Pitt (5-2, 1-2 Big East) grabbed the early 1-0 lead following doubles play. Elizabeth Adams and Shannon Benic were 8-1 winners over team Haralambopoulos/Sadovnikova at No. 1 doubles. Gabi Catanzariti and Sabrina Visram followed suit with an 8-7 (4) win in the second doubles match over Volkova/Welch.
"Winning the doubles point was crucial," said Dieffenbach. "Elizabeth Adams and Sabrina Visram each picked up two key victories and Karma Parbhu helped close out the Penguins with a convincing win in singles action."
Youngstown State (1-9) forfeited the third doubles match and entered singles down 1-0. Pitt kept the pressure at the start of singles play, winning the first three matches off the court. Adams, Visram and Karma Parbhu were all straight set winners on the day.
The Penguins battled back despite already having lost the match, taking the final three singles matches of the day.
"Today's 4-3 victory gives us momentum going into our next match at home against Duquesne," said Dieffenbach.
Pitt will be back in action on Tuesday, March 23, as they host cross-town rival Duquesne University. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m. at The Club in Monroeville. The Panthers will celebrate senior day prior to the start of the match, honoring seniors Marie Eanes-Fennelly, Sabrina Visram and Shannon Benic.
