
Panthers Cruise to 7-0 Win Over Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team kicked off its final weekend of regular season play with a convincing 7-0 win over Big East Conference rival Providence.
The Panthers (9-6, 4-4 Big East) swept every match in both doubles and singles play on the day to pick up their ninth win of the season and put head coach George Dieffenbach within one win of reaching 300 for his career.
“Today the Panthers had a quality win against a much improved Providence team,” said Dieffenbach. “Everyone contributed to the victory today with a lot of intensity which gives us momentum going into tomorrow’s critical match against St. John’s.”
Elizabeth Adams and Shannon Benic started the day off with an 8-1 win over the doubles team of Aviles-Duron/Sinha at No. 1 doubles. Both Adams and Benic picked up wins in singles play in straight sets as well. Adams was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Marisela Aviles-Duron while Benic took No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-0 margin over Courtney Burek.
“Adams had a very strong victory at No. 1 singles against Aviles, who has had a tremendous year against great competition,” said Dieffenbach.
Gabi Catanzariti and Sabrina Visram picked up the win the 9-7 win in No. 2 doubles over Cusack/Ferry while Sarah Dieffenbach and Minh Evans paired up in No. 3 doubles, winning 8-3 over Fuller/Dalferro.
Ahead 1-0 entering singles play, Pitt didn’t let up, taking all but one match in straight sets. Adela Aprodu returned to the lineup in the No. 2 singles slot and was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Ayushi Sinha. Catanzariti and Visram each picked up their second win of the day at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively while Karma Parbhu battled back after dropping her first set 6-7, (5) against Melissa Ferry, taking the next two by a 6-0, 10-7 score.
The Panthers will continue their weekend road swing, facing St. John’s University tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Storrs, Conn. Pitt will then take on Connecticut in the regular-season finale on Sunday, April 18.
