BALTIMORE, Md.—Five Panthers earned first-place finishes, as Pitt’s men’s track and field team won the MSU Legacy Track Meet, held at Hughes Stadium, this weekend. The Panthers tallied 135 points among the 13-team field, edging out second place Maryland-Baltimore County (129) and Maryland-Eastern Shore (95).
Earning two first place finishes, junior Garrett Larkin won both the shot put and hammer throw. His toss of 15.59M in the shot put qualified for the Big East Championships. He just missed the IC4A mark of 15.60M in that same event.
Winning the triple jump, sophomore Folarin Ijelu collected an IC4A finish of 14.70M in the event. Earlier in the meet, Ijelu recorded a leap of 7.02M in the long jump. He finished third in that event and qualified for the conference meet.
Senior Ron Walter won the pole vault with a height of 4.90M. His mark qualified for the IC4A Championships.
Two Panthers qualified for the Big East Championships, after improving upon their prelim finishes in the 110M hurdles. Freshman Tashaun Hill placed second with a time of 14.89, while freshman Caleb Matthews was third at 15.04. Hill’s prelim time of 14.31 was just short of last year’s NCAA Regional standard of 14.30.
Sophomore Kurt Barnhart recorded a Big East standard with a second-place performance in the discus (43.62M).
Placing third in the 400M hurdles, sophomore Jermaine Lowery recorded a conference standard with a time of 53.74. Additionally, Jerome Lowery earned a top-10 finish in the same event and also qualified for the Big East Championships.
Finishing third in the 4x400M relay event, the team of sophomores Dontave Cowsette, Jerome Lowery, Jermaine Lowery and Elliot Rhodes recorded a time of 3:26.98.
In other top-three finishes on the weekend, Cowsette won the 1,500M run, while Matthews was second in the high jump and sophomore Greg Kareis finished second in the 800M run.
Additionally, junior Maka Mudekunye earned a seed in the finals of the 100M dash, where he took sixth.
The Panthers will travel to the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 22, for three days of competition in Philadelphia, and their final opportunity to qualify for the Big East Championships.
