Post-Game Quotes
West Virginia
Quoting Coach Mike Carey
On what his team did well
“I thought we came out playing the floor really well, especially in the first half. In the second half we could not get our game going because we kept fouling. I give our girls a lot of credit for playing hard, though. We just have to play smarter down the stretch. They made a lot of foul shots, and we missed a lot of ours. We needed this badly. We finally score over 50 points – 90, actually, but now we have to work on defense.”
On how the team has responded since the Pitt loss in Morgantown
“I have been watching extra film. Our offense has become passive. We’ve been looking for the special play. We just have to be more aggressive and take the shots.”
On offensive explosion in today’s game
“All five starters were in double figures. We haven’t had that all year. That changed today because we pushed the ball up court. We had 21 assists, which is the most we’ve had all year, because people made plays. That’s what we have to do every game.”
Pittsburgh
Quoting Head Coach Agnus Berenato
On why the comeback fell short
“West Virginia played really well. They shot 48% to our 41%, which is great for both teams, but they really took it to us in the first half. We couldn’t really recover. We dug ourselves into a hole no matter what, and we couldn’t climb out of it. Taneisha had a great game. She played 38 minutes, scored 28 points, and had four rebounds. We made up in the second half but we couldn’t weather the storm. I want to send my compliments to West Virginia. They had five players in double figures. They attacked well. They’re a really good team.”
On West Virginia’s Madina Ali
“She’s been playing with a stress fracture all year. She’s mentally tough. She had yet another great game. I’m not amazed by her play because of how she’s played all year. She scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds in 28 minutes. She stepped up and played well.”
On illness and injury affecting the team
“If you took notice, Leeza Burgess wasn’t on the bench. I sent her home. She’s sick with the flu. She came to the shoot around this morning but she came down with a fever. Thus we didn’t have the rotation. In addition, Shayla [Scott] is struggling with mobility, and then Chelsea [Cole] got hurt. We only had one sub – Kyra. Had Leeza been well she would have played 20 minutes. You can’t really say what you would do [with the extra players], but Leeza would have had a lot of minutes. As a result, Chelsea had to play while she was limping up the court.”
