PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s women’s tennis team earned its second shutout victory of the season, as the Panthers convincingly defeated St. Bonaventure 7-0 at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club on Sunday. The Panthers improved to 3-4 on the season, while the Bonnie slipped to 2-4 overall.
In the first-ever tennis match played at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club, Pitt earned its 12th-consecutive win in the series against SBU.
The match started with Pitt earning an early 1-0 advantage after sweeping the doubles. Finishing first was the No. 1 pairing of freshmen Kimmy Borza and Jocelyn Lu. They took a 3-2 lead in their match and then cruised to an 8-3 victory.
Finishing second for the Panthers was the team of sophomore Karma Parbhu and freshman Brittney Russell. The No. 3 doubles team trailed early in the match. After splitting a pair of games they were behind 4-3. However, Parbhu and Russell would win the next two games and take a 5-4 lead. A few games later, Russell won the seventh game with a shot down the line that would have forced her opponent to change direction. Soon after, Parbhu solidified the doubles point with a soft swing that St. Bonaventure’s threes misplayed. Threes won 8-6.
At the completion of the No. 1 match, Pitt’s No. 2 had jumped out to a 7-2 advantage. However, the duo of sophomore Gabrielle Catanzariti and freshman Taylor Washington would drop two in a row before sealing the deal with a great return from Catanzariti. The match featured several great closeouts from Washington, as the pair won 8-4.
Every Panther earned a two-set victory in singles action. Junior Minh Evans recorded a shutout in the No. 6 slot. This is Evans’ third win of the year and second consecutive.
Both Lu and Borza only dropped one game in their two-set victories, while Russell gave up one game in each of her two sets.
The Panthers are off from competition until Sunday, March 6, when they travel to Nova Southeastern for a 10 a.m. match.
