PITTSBURGH—Despite playing a hard-fought match, the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Duquesne at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club this afternoon. The Panthers slipped to 6-8 on the year.
The Panthers dropped the doubles point, ending its three-match win streak. Pitt went 2-1 in the matches.
The No. 2s were the first to finish the opening set and took a 1-0 lead in their match. The duo of freshmen Jocelyn Lu and Kimmy Borza would later win the fourth game of their contest after the Dukes couldn’t return Borza’s serve. The Panthers led 4-3 at that point in the match and continued to stay ahead after splitting the next six sets.
Lu and Borza earned their seventh game with a long volley that ended out of bounds, off the racket of a Duquesne player. The pair ended the match in the next series to earn their 10th win of the season.
The team of junior Minh Evans and freshman Taylor Washington saw their three-match win streak come to an end in No. 3 doubles today. The pair was victorious in their first set, which included an ace from Washington. However, they later trailed 4-3 despite aggressive play at the net from both Evans and Washington.
The Panthers tied the match at four games a piece with back-to-back double serving faults from the Dukes. However, the Duquesne would pull ahead again and hold on for the eventual win at 8-4.
Pitt’s Ones of senior Elizabeth Adams and Gabrielle Catanzariti trailed 7-2 in their match, before they battled back and won two straight. The Dukes, however, would power back to win the final game and give Duquesne the doubles point.
In singles action, Evans was the lone Panther to post a win. She tallied an identical straight set victory in No. 6 singles.
Both Borza and sophomore Karma Parbhu forced tiebreakers, but were unable to pull off the comeback.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 30, when they host Youngstown State at noon.
