ATHENS, Ohio—The Pitt women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Ohio University Sunday at Chessa Field. Pitt drops to 0-1-1 on the young season while Ohio improves to 1-1-0.
Host Ohio used goals from seniors Rachael Philpot and Kelsey Pichel along with a shutout by goalkeeper Mattie Liston to register its first win.
Pitt outshot the Bobcats 10-9 and fired five shots on the Bobcat goal, but could not find the net. Freshman Ali Matisse led the Panthers with three shots.
Ohio opened the scoring in the 24th minute. The run started down the right sideline as freshman Erin Feeney played a ball to senior Toye Famodu. Famodu dribbled toward the box and found Philpot at the far post. Philpot headed the ball into the open net beyond the reach of Pitt goalkeeper Kristina Rioux.
Pichel added an insurance goal for the Bobcats at the 51:05 mark. She settled a ball that came from junior Erin Schwenke. Schwenke’s ball was played over the top of the box to Pichel on the left flank. Pichel placed the ball over the hands of Rioux from 14 yards out to find the back of the net.
Ohio held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Pitt’s Rioux finished with four saves.
Pitt (0-1-1) is back in action next weekend when it plays in the James Madison Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. Pitt plays host James Madison on Friday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. ET, then takes on Delaware on Sunday, August 28 at 11 a.m. ET.
