
Pitt Volleyball Falls to Miami at Home, 3-0

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (21-5, 9-4 ACC) fell to Miami (18-7, 11-3 ACC) Friday evening, 3-0, at the Fitzgerald Field House.
Pitt dropped the first set 25-19, the second set 25-14 and the third set 25-17.
Senior Kate Yeazel recorded 12 kills in the loss to lead the Panthers offensively while Lindsey Zitzke put up 19 assists.
Both Pitt and the Hurricanes got off to a tough start in the first set as both teams recorded a service ace to begin. As the two teams settled in, the score remained close throughout the beginning points. With the score tied 9-9, Miami went on a four point run to take a 13-9 lead over Pitt which led to a Panthers timeout. Pitt answered out of the timeout as an attack error by the Hurricanes and two kills by Yeazel brought the team back within a point. The Panthers and Miami battled through the middle portion of the set with Pitt only trailing,17-19 heading into the final points. The Panthers were unable to keep up as the Hurricanes went on two final runs to seal the deal, 25-19.
Pitt fell behind 2-0 in the match after dropping the second set, 25-14. The Panthers struggled early on, falling behind 5-10. Pitt called a timeout to try and slow the Hurricanes but Miami continued to add points. The Hurricanes continued on with 6-0 run to extend their lead to 17-8. Pitt added five more kills throughout the rest of the match but couldn't catch the Hurricanes as Miami went on to win by 11.
The Hurricanes got off to another quick start in the third set, taking an 8-4 lead to begin. Miami was forced to call a timeout once the Panthers pulled within a point of the Hurricanes bringing the score to 12-11. Out of the timeout Miami went on a three point run to force a Pitt timeout but that didn't stop the Hurricanes as they tacked on a fourth and fifth point after the second timeout to now lead 17-11. The Panthers added six more points which included kills by Yeazel, Maria Genitsaridi, Amanda Orchard but it wasn't enough as Miami finished the match on a five point run.
Pitt will conclude play this weekend when they take Virginia Tech for the second time this season on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Fitzgerald Field House, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
