CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Amanda Wickman will play for the Flight B singles championship on Sunday morning after winning her match on Saturday to highlight Pitt’s day two action at the Harvard Invitational.
Wickman reached tomorrow’s final with a tiebreak victory over Mirda of Harvard. Wickman lost the first set 3-6, but returned the favor in the second set with a 6-3 victory. In the tiebreak, Wickman tallied a 10-6 decision to move on to the finals. She will take on Li of Harvard at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
After winning her first match of the day in Flight A singles, Audrey Ann Blakely lost in the semifinals to Harvard’s Jang-Milsten in a third set tiebreak, 2-6, 6-2, 10-5. Blakely reached the semifinals by winning her opening match of the day over Harvard’s Hu in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, the duo of Lolade Ogungbesan and Amber Washington lost in the semifinals to Lee/Lin of Harvard by the score of 8-4. Ogungbesan and Washington were the only Pitt duo remaining in the main draw.
In the consolation bracket, Amanda Wickman and Callie Frey recorded an 8-4 doubles victory over Wyman/Lin, and Frey defeated Mitchell of Syracuse in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
“We set up the tone in doubles. We came out with great energy, playing aggressive tennis and taking chances,” head coach Alex Santos said. “In singles, it was delightful to see Audrey Ann competing hard and playing impressive tennis. She ended up a couple of points short of being in the final, but she got closer to being the player we need her to be. Amanda went undefeated on the day in both singles and doubles and she did things on the court that I always knew she was capable of but that I haven’t seen on match day. Amanda is a fighter and her game is expanding. Tomorrow she will have a battle on her hands and she will have to play her best tennis to be successful.”
The conclusion of the Harvard Invitational will take place on Sunday.
