Pitt Opens Seven Game Home Stand with Drexel on Sunday

PITTSBURGH – After a week off from game action, the University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team returns to the Petersen Events Center on Sunday afternoon to host the Drexel Dragons at 2 p.m.
This is the first of a seven game home stand for the Panthers who enter the contest at 5-3 overall. Drexel visits Pittsburgh with a record of 4-2 and Pitt will be the first team from a “Power 5” conference the Dragons have played this season.
It is Camper Reunion Day at the Pete. All participants from Pitt’s summer camps can gain $1 admission by wearing their camp t-shirt to the game. In-game activities include a high-five player tunnel, premium seating the Oakland Zoo and a post-game autograph session with the players.
DIOP NAMED ACC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK:
Forward Yacine Diop is the reigning ACC Freshman of the Week after averaging 18 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games last week. Diop scored 14 points and had nine rebounds, including the game clinching offensive board with 10 seconds left at Ohio State, and then followed that up with 22 points and 10 rebounds at Duquesne. The double-double was the first of her career. Diop made 17 of her 26 shots in the two games, good for 65.4 percent from the floor. She is the first-ever Pitt Panthers to be named ACC Freshman of the Week.
SWAT MACHINE:
Senior Monica Wignot nearly notched a triple-double at Duquesne as she finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks. Wignot continues to lead the ACC in blocks per game at 3.6 rejections a contest. She has had at least three blocks in seven of the eight games this season, and four or more in four of those games.
KIESEL MOVES INTO 8TH ON PITT’S CAREER SCORING LIST:
Brianna Kiesel moved into 8th place on Pitt’s all-time scoring list with her 23-point effort at Duquesne. She passed Wanda Randolph for 8th and she now has 1,485 career points. Kiesel is one of the most productive guards in the ACC as she ranks 6th in scoring (17.1), 3rd in assists (4.3) and 1st in assist/turnover ratio (3.4/1).
SCOUTING DREXEL:
Sophomore Sarah Curran is the team’s leading scorer at 14.8 points per game and has a season-high of 25 coming against Saint Joseph’s. Junior Rachel Pearson helps in the scoring department with an average of 11.2 points per game, while she also leads the team in rebounding at 5.5 a contest.
