GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coming off a week in which she averaged 18 points and 9.5 rebounds, forward Yacine Diop has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week.
Diop helped the Panthers notch a 78-74 road win at Ohio State last Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge by scoring 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting and also added nine rebounds. Diop had the game-clinching play against the Buckeyes as her offensive rebounds with 12 seconds remaining essentially iced the game.
She then out-did that performance on Sunday at Duquesne with her first career double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. She was 10-of-13 from the floor and also chipped in with four assists and one steal.
For the week, Diop shot 73.9 percent (17-of-26) and pulled down 19 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive glass.
“We are very proud of Yacine,” head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said. “She is improving with every game and she had a great week with two highly productive games.”
Diop has raised her overall average to 7.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. She is the first ever Pitt Panthers to be the recipient of this distinction.
The Panthers (5-3) are off until next Sunday, December 14, when they return to the Petersen Events Center to host the Drexel Dragons (4-2) at 2 p.m.
