PITTSBURGH – Local product Callie Frey is the lone freshman on this year’s Pitt tennis roster. Despite not playing in a collegiate match yet, she had the opportunity this summer to team up with sophomore Audrey Ann Blakely during the ITA Summer Circuit.
Frey and Blakely experienced success as they captured the doubles title at the ITA Pittsburgh tournament in Mt. Lebanon, which just so happens to be where Frey is from. They also placed second in doubles at the Mary Washington tournament.
Frey is settling in and is looking forward to her first collegiate tournament. Below is a Q&A with Frey as she describes what it was like playing with Audrey Ann this summer and how her transition to college has been.
Question: Take me through your summer. You and sophomore Audrey Ann [Blakely] played in a couple of tournaments together. Tell me about that and how it went.
“I’ve known Audrey Ann for a few years now. We played in juniors together for about a year before Audrey Ann came to college. We played in a few ITA’s over the summer. We took first in one of them in Mt. Lebanon, where I live, and took second in another. I am really proud of our accomplishments.”
Question: Talk about having that familiarity with somebody on the team prior to coming to college and how that has helped your transition.
“When I came in I was really nervous and a little lost because it is college and it is a lot different than high school. Audrey Ann helped a lot. I would always ask questions about where to go; how to get somewhere. She really helped me with everything to the point where I am familiar with everything now.”
Question: In two weeks you guys go down to the University of Miami and play in your first collegiate tournament. Talk about that tournament and your excitement for it.
“I am so excited. I have been waiting for college tennis forever. This is our first tournament. Miami is a great team and the competition down there is going to be amazing so I can’t wait to get started.”
The Panthers open their fall competition next weekend, September 19, in Miami at the Hurricane Invitational.
