CHICAGO – Led by Molly Wickman and Audrey Ann Blakely who reached the finals of the Flight A doubles bracket, the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team performed very well this weekend at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern.
“We take a lot of positives and confidence out of the Wildcat Invite,” head coach Alex Santos said. “I can see the will and urgency to take Pitt Tennis to new heights is now a reality for this team. Every single player on the team played quality tennis at points throughout the weekend, and the road ahead tells us that we have to be more consistent keeping that same quality and then even elevating it in the big moments. This group of girls is learning how to fight, care, have pride in the program, but in a conference like the ACC we have to become faster and more efficient with the process.”
Molly Wickman and Blakely played to an overall doubles record of 3-1 together with wins over teams from Northwestern, Michigan State and FIU. In Sunday’s final, the Pitt duo dropped an 8-4 decision to Kling/Lancranjan of DePaul.
Overall, the Panthers played to a singles record of 11-12 and had four players – Callie Frey, Lolade Ogungbesan, Amanda Wickman and Molly Wickman – reach the quarterfinals of the tournament. Pitt was 5-4 in doubles.
This was Pitt’s second straight top notch tournament to open the fall season. After last week’s Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Pitt stood toe-to-toe with perennial nationally ranked teams this week in Northwestern, Kentucky, Oklahoma, DePaul and Michigan State among others.
The Panthers are off next week and will then travel to New Haven, Conn., on Oct. 10-12 for the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Yale.
