PHILADELPHIA--LaSalle's Danielle Las Marx scored a goal in the 65th minute to hand the Pitt women's soccer team a 1-0 defeat Sunday at McCarthy Stadium. The loss drops Pitt to 4-3-0 on the year, while LaSalle improves to 2-2-1.
At the game's 65:01 mark, Las Marx headed the ball past Pitt goalkeeper Taylor Francis after receiving a pass from Kelsey Haycook. Deja Davis also assisted on the play.
"La Salle is athletic, hard-working and they understand what they're trying to do and they do it effectively," Pitt coach Greg Miller said. "If you don't match their intensity and physicality, it becomes easier for them and harder for us. Today, we were reactionary."
"Individually, Taylor Francis and Hanna Hannesdottir both had good games, but we've got to be better on Sundays and bring a different mentality of work. That's what you're going to face in the ACC, teams that work hard and have talent. We'll work on it this week."
LaSalle outshot Pitt 15-7. Freshman Hanna Hannesdottir led the Panthers with two shots. Alex Charlebois, Siobhan McDonough, Taylor Pryce, Shaina Ashouri and Ashley Moreira each finished with one shot apiece. The Explorers also had four corner kicks to the Panthers' three.
"We dodged some bullets in the first half," Miller said. "Then in the second half, they got a goal out of it and we never responded. We had a few chances to score, two corner kicks early on, along with several balls in the box off the corner kicks that we didn't take advantage of."
Pitt goalkeeper Taylor Francis finished with six saves, while LaSalle's Jessica Wiggins tallied three.
Pitt completed its two-match weekend road trip to Philadelphia with a 1-1 record. The Panthers defeated Villanova 2-1 on Friday evening.
Pitt is back in action on Friday, Sept. 12 when it hosts Virginia Commonwealth at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET. That match marks the final non-conference game for Pitt, which begins ACC competition on Friday, Sept. 19 vs. Duke.
