NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Pitt tennis team continued its strong play through last day of competition at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Yale. The Panthers ended the weekend by facing Harvard Sunday afternoon.
“We leave Yale on a very high note and as a better program,” head coach Alex Santos said. “I could go down our roster and complement each and every girl for all the positive things they did on the tennis court. Today it was a true team effort with everyone having a great day in both singles and/or doubles. If we can continue to compete with the same level of fight, energy, and determination, we will without a doubt have a lot of reasons to be proud in the future. We take a lot of confidence from this tournament but we also know that we have a lot to improve as well.”
Pitt ended its final day of competition with two doubles victories. Junior Lolade Ogungbesan and freshman Carina Ma carried their momentum from yesterday into today as the duo defeated Harvard’s Ringblom/Kallenberg, 8-4. Competing together for the first time this fall, senior Amber Washington and Callie Frey defeated their Harvard opponents He/Jasper, 8-4.
The Panthers finished the Bulldog Invitational 6-6 in doubles.
In singles action, five different Pitt players earned victories on the day. Ma finished the invitational with a 3-0 record after blanking Harvard’s Isabel Jasper, 6-0, 6-0. The freshman is now 6-5 in singles this fall.
Junior Audrey Ann Blakely cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Annika Ringblom of Harvard, while freshman Natsumi Okamoto claimed her fourth win of the fall after taking down Harvard’s Danielle Mirda, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Clara Lucas picked up her second victory after a hard-fought battle with Rutgers’ Lee Levy, 6-4, 7-6 (8). Rounding out the Pitt singles wins was Washington who defeated Farris Cunningham of Rutgers, 6-3, 6-2. Washington is now 6-5 this fall.
The Panthers have a quick break before heading to the 2015 USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on Oct. 15-19, hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
