Ogungbesan and Washington Advance to Semifinals at ITA Regionals

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The doubles team of junior Lolade Ogungbesan and senior Amber Washington are set to compete in the semifinal round of the doubles main draw at the ITA Atlantic Regionals on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 12:30 p.m.

Ogungbesan/Washington have battled their way through the main draw, taking down opponents from Virginia Tech and VCU, prior to defeated a pair from Maryland today. The duo is now the first doubles team to ever make it to the semifinal round of an ITA tournament.

"I am very happy and proud to see Lolade and Amber in the Regionals doubles semifinals; most importantly because of the way they acted and played on the tennis court," head coach Alex Santos said. "It was intense, smart, and high pressure tennis from the first point to the match point. They fought to get the outcome they were looking for. We have a couple details to learn from and to prepare for tomorrow's match in the best possible way."

The tandem defeated Maryland's Kristina Hovsepyan and Ekaterina Tour, in a thrilling match that resulted in an 8-4 Pitt victory.

Next up for Ogungbesan/Washington is the second-seeded Cavaliers team of Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley.

Although finding success in doubles action, Ogungbesan was defeated earlier in the day by Natalia Vlasova of Old Dominion, 6-2, 6-4, in the singles main draw round of 32.

Also in singles competition, sophomore Callie Frey returned to the win column as she defeated West Virginia's Hailey Barrett, 6-2, 6-4, in the consolation. Frey is set to face Arnelle Sullivan of Maryland on Sunday.

"Callie had another positive day and it seems repetitive, but we don't take her high quality consistency for granted," Santos said. "We love seeing her game improve and her eagerness for more."

Junior Audrey Ann Blakey also notched a win this afternoon as she won a tough battle, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8, over Jackie Marr of Marshall in the singles consolation. Blakely will take on Lucy Williams of Towson on Sunday as well.
