PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team will play its first road game of the season on Monday evening when the Panthers travel to take on Saint Francis at DeGol Arena. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
Pitt (1-0) opened the season with a 67-41 victory over Wagner last Friday in which the Panthers held the Seahawks to just 28.3 percent shooting and forced Wagner into 20 turnovers. Saint Francis is 0-1 after a season-opening 93-86 loss to Cincinnati.
The Panthers will rely on their youth the entire season and it was evident in the opening game. Pitt received 88 percent of its points and 94 percent of its rebounds from the freshman and sophomore class combined against Wagner.
Sophomore guard Aysia Bugg scored a team-high 12 points, while fellow sophomore Stasha Carey added 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals, three blocks and two assists.
Freshman Brenna Wise tallied a double-double in her first career game with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Kauai Bradley had 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting in her career debut, including 3-of-4 from downtown.
Pitt allowed just 15 points in the entire second half. Sophomore Yacine Diop was primarily tasked with defending Wagner’s Jasmine Nwajei, who was the nation’s second leading scorer last year, and held her to just six points on 2-of-13 shooting.
SCOUTING SFU:
Saint Francis received 18 points from freshman Madison Johnson in its loss to Cincinnati as she led four players in double figures. The Red Flash defense, however, allowed 44 percent shooting to the Bearcats and could not slow down Ana Owens who had 25 points.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Panthers will return to the Petersen Events Center of Friday to host Delaware State before heading to the U.S. Virgin Islands next week to play South Dakota State, Old Dominion and Maryland at the Paradise Jam.
