Pitt Defeats IUP 75-60 in Exhibition Action

PITTSBURGH - Freshman Brenna Wise scored 19 points to lead three Panthers in double figures as the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team defeated Indiana University (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon 75-60 at the Petersen Events Center.
Wise connected on eight of her 11 shots and also added four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Yacine Diop chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while junior Fred Potvin scored all 10 of her points in the first half.
The Panthers shot 54.7 percent for the game and held IUP to 37 percent shooting. Pitt also outscored the Crimson Hawks 42-18 in the paint.
With Pitt leading 5-4 early in the first quarter, the Panthers busted the game open with a 13-2 run. Wise scored six of her eight first quarter points during that span. Pitt led 26-11 at the end of the first quarter.
IUP opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to get with nine (28-19), but the Panthers regained their balance and outscored the Crimson Hawks 16-7 down the stretch to lead 44-26 at halftime.
Wise had 12 points in the first half to lead all players while Potvin joined her in double figures with 10.
The Crimson Hawks outscored the Panthers 12-4 to open the second half and cut the lead to 50-38 at the first media timeout of the third quarter. The Panthers though, scored the next seven and ultimately led 58-41 at the end of three.
IUP had one final run as the Hawks scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, but Aysia Bugg ended the run with a hoop and the Panthers would play with a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.
IUP received 19 points from Leslie Stapleton and 12 from Zhane Brooks to lead the Crimson Hawks.
The Panthers open the regular season this coming Friday against Wagner at the Petersen Events Center. It is Pitt's annual School Day game and tip is set for 11 a.m.
