Tennis Enters Final Day of Competition in Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Pitt tennis team battled their way through some of the best tennis in the country on Saturday as junior Audrey Ann Blakely and freshman Carina Ma won the consolation Green Doubles Draw final.
Blakely/Ma initially lost to Muller/Turner of Auburn Friday morning, 6-0, but a walkover advanced them to the consolation finals. The duo took down Blanno/Dikosavljevic, 6-1.
Three Panthers posted their first singles victories of the fall season on Saturday.
“The biggest priority for us yesterday was to be resilient and to believe in ourselves,” head coach Alex Santos said. “We are always looking for ways to win that last point, and we definitely stepped it up in terms of energy, confidence, and intensity. As a group, I felt we were competitive and able to close out some tough battles. Today is our last day of tennis at Miami and we want to leave ourselves on the court.”
Not only did Blakely perform well in doubles, the junior also made her way to the Orange Singles Draw consolation semifinals after a hard-fought win over Auburn’s Andie Dikosavljevic, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). Blakely was eventually defeated by Rasheeda McAdoo of Georgia Tech, 7-5, 6-1. Blakely will play for third place in the consolation bracket Sunday morning.
Rezende, a native of Curitiba, Brazil, notched her first collegiate win when she took down her teammate Lolado Ogungbesan in the Orange Singles Consolation Back Draw, 1-6, 6-4, 5-1, and retired.
Senior Amber Washington advanced to the Green Singles Draw quarterfinals, after posting a 6-2, 6-1, win over Ana Madcur of Miami. However, Washington was defefated by the No. 1 seed Miho Kowase of Ohio State, 7-5, 6-4. Washington fell again in the Main Draw Consolation to the No. 4 seed Paula de Man of Auburn, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5).
