PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team opened the 2016 season on a high note Friday afternoon, winning two doubles matches and collecting six singles victories against No. 52 Marshall in the Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invite.

Junior Lolade Ogungbesan played impressive tennis in the opener, as she and redshirt senior Amber Washington defeated Derya Turhan and Rachael Morales in doubles, 6-4. Ogungbesan faced Turhan again in singles where she came out with a 6-2, 6-4 win over the 99th-ranked opponent.

The young doubles team of sophomore Callie Frey and freshman Carina Ma dominated Anne Gulsrud and Marija Bogicevic in No. 3 doubles, 6-1, after giving up an early game.

The Panthers carried their doubles momentum into singles action, sweeping on all courts. Ma had the first singles win of the day as she took down Maddie Silver 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Gabriela Rezende followed that with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Anne Gulsrud. Rezende initially trailed through the first five games, but came back to tie it twice at 3-3 and 4-4, but eventually came out with the win.

Frey also came out with a victory in a hard-fought battle with Marija Bogicevic, taking the first set 7-6 after being tied three different times. She bounced back in the second set 6-1 to solidify the win.

Junior Audrey Ann Blakely recovered from a doubles loss by defeating Rachael Morales, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. Although dropping the first set, Blakely recovered in the second set as she led in the last four games. In the final set, Blakely tied it up four times before finalizing the win.

Pitt returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. with Miami (OH).
