UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s track and field teams successfully concluded the Penn State National at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track with numerous personal records.
“Overall it was a good meet,” head coach Alonzo Webb said. “We need to have a sense of urgency with the ACC Championship Meet coming up, and our kids understand that and they did well this weekend. Our women’s throwers and long distance runners have been consistent every meet so that is great to see.
“We have another big meet next weekend at Virginia Tech where we will see a bunch of ACC and SEC teams, so that will give us a good gauge of what our championship meet will be like.”
Fresh off helping the women’s distance medley relay team set a school record last night, impact transfer Kelly Hayes returned to the track to win the university section of the 3,000 meter run in a career best time of 9:43.87.
Pitt went 1-2 in the 3,000 meter as Amy Kelly finished behind Hayes in a time of 9:52.25, while Abby Peters was sixth overall in a time of 10:01.16. All three athletes established personal bests.
Sophomore Morgan Harvey continued her strong season by establishing a new career record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.87, which placed her third overall in the university division.
Jamilia Branch, who was a member of last night’s school record DMR team, ran a new career best in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:16.80 as she finished eighth, while Emily Schumacher also ran a PR in the same event in 1:17.54 to place 13th. Beth Shenck, who ran the 800 last night in the DMR, took home fourth place in the open 800 meter run with a personal record time of 2:11.49.
Highlighting the men’s long distance efforts was sophomore Billy Caldwell who placed ninth in the mile with a new career time of 4:19.93. In the 3,000 meter run, Pitt took places 4-6, led by Sebastian Curtin (8:32.07), and followed by Aaron Lauer (8:32.25) and Matt McGoey (8:32.48).
In the men’s 200 meter dash invitational section, junior Brylan Slay established a personal best with a time of 21.74 which placed him third in his heat and eighth overall.
Racquel Williams and Kailyn Clancy each had standout days for the Panthers in the shot put en route to top 10 finishes. Both threw personal bests as Williams was fifth overall (15.68m, 51-05.50 feet) and Clancy eighth (14.90m – 48-10.75).
With now just two meets left until the ACC Championship Meet, the Panthers will head to the Virginia Tech Elite next weekend in Blacksburg, Va.
