NORFOLK, Va. - The Pitt tennis team opened competition Friday, Oct. 14, at the 2016 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on the campus of Old Dominion University.
Redshirt senior Amber Washington, junior Callie Frey and sophomore Gabriela Rezende were the three Panthers in action today. The trio of Pitt players went a combined 4-1 between singles and doubles.
"Today was very positive for Pitt tennis," head coach Alex Santos said. "Callie had to really dig deep to overcome being a set down against a quality opponent. In her second match, she definitely stepped up her level of tennis and it is with all merits that she is now in the main draw. Gabi won a good first round and is learning a lot in terms of efficiency and maturity. I know that she is upset about losing her second match but that will make her tougher and a better player. In doubles, Amber and Callie played a very complete match and pretty much didn't give any unforced errors while dictating play."
Frey, the No. 1 seed in the singles qualifier, opened the day by defeating Caroline Williams of Maryland 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-5, and followed that by a dominating performance over Melis Bayraktaroglu of George Washington, 6-2, 6-1.
Rezende also started the morning with a win in singles as she defeated Ansofi Wreder of Navy 6-1, 7-5. In her next match, she battled Maddie Silver of Marshall and fell 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
In doubles, Frey and Washington blanked their La Salle opponents, 8-0.
Action resumes Saturday, Oct. 15, at 9 a.m.
