CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Pitt tennis team opened competition Friday afternoon at the Harvard Invitational at the Breen Tennis Center. The Panthers faced Boston University to start the weekend, collecting three doubles wins and four singles victories.
"I was very pleased with the way we played doubles today," said head coach Alex Santos. "We were aggressive, efficient and made very few unforced errors. I think the strong start in doubles ended up hurting us a little bit in singles where we lacked a little bit more urgency. Tomorrow we definitely need to do a better job in terms of energy."
The Panthers got a hot start to the day, dominating BU in all three doubles matches. The senior duo of Audrey Ann Blakely and Lolade Ogungbesan opened the morning with a 6-4 win over the BU pair of Rodriguez/Faybysher, while the tandem of redshirt senior Amber Washington and junior Callie Frey and the team of sophomores Gabriela Rezende and Clara Lucas both defeated their opponents by 6-1, respectively.
Collecting singles victories on the day were Blakely, Rezende, Frey and Lucas. Blakely outlasted Rodriguez in three sets, 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-3, while Rezende picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Faybysher. Frey also dominated her match, 6-3, 6-4, while Lucas rounded out the Pitt singles victories with a dominating performance of O'Fagan, 6-3, 6-1.
The Panthers resume action Saturday, Nov. 5, at 10:30 a.m. to take on the host team Harvard.
