Day Three Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team continued action in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships Friday from the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Meme Sharp and Kinga Cichowska produced impressive performances for the Panthers.
Sharp entered the finals of the 3M competition as the third-place qualifier, earning a mark of 347.10 in the preliminary round on Friday afternoon. The sophomorefollowed her performance with a school record, 360.00, taking home the first place title.
She trailed both Elissa Dawson of UNC and Rebecca Corbet of UVA by over eight points with just two dives remaining, but posted a 64.50 and a 58.50 on her final two dives to come from behind and take the top spot.
Sharp is the first ACC Women's gold medalist in Pitt history.
"The Pitt women cheered louder than all of the teams while they watched Meme Sharp win the ACC title in the 3M dive," said head coach Chuck Knoles. "This is our first women's ACC title!"
Also competing for Pitt on the 3M board were Rachel Saunders (260.65), Sam Winkelmann (246.60) and Cheyanne Neuenschwander (220.90).
Earlier in the day, in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke, Chichowska broke her previous and school record of 1:01.12, when she swam a 1:01:00. The time was good enough to qualify the junior for the finals.
Chichowska used the momentum from her morning to finish seventh with a school record time of 1:00.90.
After a short break, the Panthers returned to pool for the 100 backstroke C final. Pitt captain Blair Wegescheide finished first (54.12), edging out Louisville's Kenzie Buss by one, one-hundredth of a second.
"It was a nice night to be a Pitt Panther at the Greensboro Aquatic Center." Knoles added. "As a team, one of the hardest things to do is to turn your focus around, and allow for success. Our women did that tonight. We want to carry that on through to tomorrow's preliminaries and finals."
In the final event of the evening, Pitt took second place in the first heat of the 400 medley relay. The team of Wegescheide, Chichowska, Leticia Lelli and Emily Murphy set another school record, clocking a time of 3:40.63. The mark was good for the ninth best time overall.
With three days of competition in the books, the Panthers sit in 10th in the field of 13, earning 284.00 points. Virginia leads the way with 897.50 points, followed by NC State (807.00) and North Carolina (733.00) to round out the top three.
