PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team (2-0) recorded its second dual victory of the season Friday afternoon after defeating Youngstown State 6-1.

The Panthers handed the Penguins their fourth loss of the season.

"I thought we came out of the gate strong and got a fast point on the board in doubles which is very important," head coach Alex Santos said. "Amber [Washington] and Lolade [Ogungbesan] had quick wins in singles which gave us a lot of momentum. Closing the door is never easy. We faced some nerves and I was happy that we overcame some adversity in order to play well in those big moments."

Pitt jumped to an early 1-0 lead as it claimed the doubles point. The duo of junior Audrey Ann Blakely and freshman Gabriela Rezende shutout their YSU opponents, 6-0, for the first doubles win. Sophomore Callie Frey and freshman Clara Lucas followed that with a 6-2 victory, locking in Pitt's doubles point.

Singles play was just as strong as doubles for the Panthers as they suffered just one loss.

Junior Lolade Ogungbesan and redshirt senior Amber Washington picked up two quick singles wins, giving Pitt a 3-0 lead in the dual.

Youngstown State claimed the third singles match, but the Panthers went on to win the rest of the matches.

Rezende had a tough battle with YSU's Nehel Sahni at No. 4 singles as she dropped the first set 5-7, but bounced back in the second and third sets 6-0, 7-5.

At No. 3 singles, Frey fell in the first set 3-6, but came back to win 6-3, 6-3.

Blakely was the last Panther to finish this afternoon, as she battled her way to a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Pitt returns to action Saturday, Feb. 6 as it hosts Penn State at noon.
