Giordano Wins NCAA Title on 3M

ATLANTA – Competing on his second board of the 2016 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, junior Dominic Giordano earned the national title on the 3M, becoming the first Pitt swimmer or diver to earn an NCAA crown.
“I went into the day with the mindset that I wanted to have fun and use the gift that God gave me to the best of my abilities, and whatever happens happens.,” said Giordano. “I feel privileged and blessed the represent Pitt and to be a part of the great legacy that Julian Krug brings. Hail to Pitt.”
Giordano dominated the final round, earning a six-dive score of 460.30 to take the title. The junior produced a mark of 96.25 in his fourth dive to pull away from the pack. Giordano led off with a score of 79.05, following with marks of 72.00 and 66.00. After his stellar 96.25 leap, Giordano closed out the evening with scores of 70.50 and 76.50 to secure the win.
Giordano is the first Pitt swimmer or diver to earn an NCAA individual title and the first member of the men’s swimming and diving program to receive All-America distinction since 2008. The last Pitt diver to earn All-America honors came in 2008 as Alex Volovetski garnered the distinction on the 1M. Jeremy Stultz was the last Pitt diver to receive All-American recognition on the 3M, earning the honor in 2007.
This is the second All-America distinction for Giordano, who placed eighth on the 1M in Thursday’s action. Giordano earns the 34th individual NCAA title in Pitt history.
In the preliminary round, Giordano qualified as the fifth diver of the field of 50, posting a score of 401.65 en route to his second final in as many attempts. Giordano earned a high score of 76.50 in his final effort to finish 0.20 points ahead of the sixth-place qualifier.
Giordano will return to the pool tomorrow for the final round of action as he sets his sights on the platform title. The junior earned the ACC title on platform in 2015 and qualified as the second-highest finisher in the Zone A Championships.
