Pitt Tennis Opens ACC Tournament with Notre Dame

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team is set to compete in the 2016 ACC Championship Wednesday, April 20 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The 14th-seeded Panthers (7-13, 1-13 ACC) will take on the No. 11 seed Notre Dame (12-12, 5-9 ACC) at 10 a.m. in the opening round.
SERIES HISTORY
Pitt and Notre Dame clash for the fifth time in program history. The two teams met earlier this season in South Bend, Ind., where the Irish claimed a 4-3 victory on Feb. 12. Notre Dame leads all meetings, 4-0.
LAST TIME OUT
The Panthers concluded the regular season on the road where they fell to No. 13 Virginia, 6-1, before suffering a 5-2 loss to No. 57 Florida State.
THIS TIME LAST YEAR
Competing in its second ACC Championship, Pitt fell in the opening round a year ago to 10th-seeded Florida State, 4-0.
WASHINGTON WORKING
Amber Washington is having herself quite the redshirt junior campaign in singles action. The St. Paul, Minn., native has earned a perfect 10-0 record when playing No. 6 and is 7-2 at No. 5 singles. Overall this season, Washington boasts a 26-8 record, including a 12-2 mark against conference opponents. Her 26 wins tie her for third-best in single-season singles wins in the Pitt tennis record book.
SCOUTING THE IRISH
Notre Dame enters the ACC Championship as the No. 10 seed and ranked 47th in the nation. The Irish concluded their regular season with a win over Virginia Tech, 4-3, a loss to Virginia, 5-2, and a non-conference shutout win over Norfolk State.
Notre Dame brings three ranked singles players to the tournament in No. 48 Quinn Gleason, No. 83 Monica Robinson and No. 107 Allison Miller. In doubles, Gleason and Robinson make up the 38th-best doubles team in the nation this week.
