PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team claimed its second win of the season over Youngstown State, sweeping the season series with a 5-3 victory in x innings at Charles L. Cost Field.
The game was called in the fifth inning due to torrential downpour in Pittsburgh.
The Panthers struck early, jumping out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. Starter Collin Liberatore pitched around a lead-off single in the first to retire the side. Charles Leblanc would extend his reached-base streak to 19 games with a one-out walk in the bottom of the frame. Nick Yarnall would smack his 10th homer of the season over the right field wall in the next at bat, putting Pitt on top 2-0.
Both teams were silent in the second, but Pitt would add another in the third off a single to center from Ronnie Sherman, allowing Leblanc to score following his second walk in as many at bats.
After retiring the first out of the inning, then surrendering a walk, Liberatore left the game following an injury, as Jextin Pugh took over on the bump. Pugh would escape the inning, stranding two Penguins to hold the lead at 3-0 in favor of Pitt.
The Panthers would score two more in the fourth inning. Frank Maldonado led-off the frame with a single up the middle, moving to second on a miscued attempted double play off the bat of Caleb Parry. A single through the right side from Jacob Wright allowed Maldonado to score to give Pitt a 4-0 lead.
Aaron Schnurbusch, who reached after a four-pitch walk, would steal home in a double-steal with Wright to put Pitt on top by five.
Youngstown State climbed back into things with three two-out runs in the fifth. Shane Willoughby reached on a hit by pitch, moving to second on a balk and third on a groundout. Lead-off hitter Lorenzo Arcuri would also reach on a hit by pitch, moving to second on a wild pitch. An infield single from Alex Larivee would allow Willougbhy to score, as Arcuri would cross the plate on a wild pitch.
A walk and another wild pitch would put runners on first and third as Pugh was replaced by Isaac Mattson on the bump. With the rain coming down steadily, the fourth wild pitch of the inning would score Youngstown State’s third of the inning, cutting the Pitt lead to 5-3.
Pitt would respond with flare in the bottom of the frame, scoring five with no outs, before the game was called due to the rain. Matt Johnson, who entered the game after Sherman took a hard slide at third, took a pitch to the back, moving to second on a wild pitch. David Yanni would also take a pitch in the next at bat, forcing the Penguins to make a call to the pen.
Maldonado would drop a bunt single to load the bases before the Panther offense ignited. A walk to Parry a single from Schnurbusch and a double from Wright allowed five runs to score.
However, due to the game getting called, the bottom of the fifth inning would not count, as Pitt would take a 5-3 victory.
With the win, Pitt improves to 25-18-0 and sweeps the season series over the Penguins. Pitt will return to the diamond tomorrow as it welcomes Penn State for an ESPN3 broadcast, set for 6 p.m.
