GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four members of the University of Pittsburgh baseball team have been named to the All-ACC Academic Teams, announced today by the league.
Yaya Chentouf, Frank Maldonado, Aaron Sandefur and Jacob Wright land on the list, each boasting an impressive resume on the field and in the classroom.
Currently enrolled in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, this is the first All-ACC Academic honor for Chentouf. A freshman from Ocoee, Fla., he was named to the All-ACC Freshman team, serving as both relief pitcher and outfielder. Chentouf was called upon as the Pitt closer, earning six saves, tying for sixth most in the league. In 24 innings of work he allowed just 22 hits and three walks, striking out 17 and holding batters to an average of just .232. To open the season, he did not surrender a walk through 18.2 innings. He made 17 appearances in the outfield, batting .212 with seven hits and six RBIs.
Maldonado earns his first All-ACC Academic honor of his career, majoring in marketing. A redshirt sophomore from Short Hills, N.J., Maldonado was a consistent force at the plate and in the outfield for the Panthers. Maldonado led the ACC in triples, smacking seven three-baggers on the season to finish seventh in the nation. He boasted Pitt's second highest average, hitting .330 in 49 starts. Additionally, he was the only Panther starter to generate a perfect fielding percentage, as he did not commit an error on 96 attempts and tied for third in the ACC in hit by pitches, taking 13 free bases off of his body.
Sandefur graduated from Pitt with a degree in business information systems and finance, earning his first All-ACC Academic recognition. A senior pitcher from Bellevue, Wash., Sandefur added a steady presence to Pitt's weekend rotation. In 13 starts, he pitched to a 3-5 record with a 4.01 ERA, second highest amongst the Panthers' starters. He tossed 74.0 innings, allowing just 33 earned runs and 27 walks, while striking out 57 batters.
This marks the second All-ACC Academic honor for Wright, who is a biological sciences major. As a redshirt junior, he continued to assist the Pitt offense, serving as both outfielder and designated hitter. An on-base machine, the Tampa, Fla., native hit .235 in 50 appearances, recording 25 RBIs and an on-base mark of .374. He drew 36 walks and seven hit by pitches, compared to just 34 strikeouts, adding 42 hits, including eight doubles, two triples and three home runs.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
Clemson's Pat Krall was named the 2016 ACC Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year. Louisville leads the way with seven All-ACC Academic honorees, followed by Clemson, North Carolina State and Wake Forest with five. Pitt checks in at third, joining Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Miami (FL) with four honorees.
