PITTSBURGH – The first Pitt female student-athlete to win an ACC title, Meme Sharp, recently earned another notable award when the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released its list of 2016 Scholar All-Americans.
Sharp, a rising junior that was crowned the 2016 ACC champion on the 3M and received Honorable Mention All-America accolades in the same event at NCAAs last season, garnered notoriety for her athletic and academic successes by being named a CSCAA first team Scholar All-American.
Sharp, who posted a 3.77 grade point average last semester as she pursues a major in communication, was joined in earning CSCAA recognition this season by seven other Panthers on the swimming & diving team that received Honorable Mention Scholar All-America for their efforts in the classroom and the pool.
Kinga Cichowska, Katherine Fernander, Emily Murphy, Blair Wegescheide and Samantha Winkelmann were the women from the 2015-16 Pitt squad to earn CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-America, while Brian Lovasik and Mackenzie Rice from the men's team also garnered the same recognition.
"We're very proud of this athletic and academic acknowledgement for our group of Scholar All-Americans," Pitt head coach John Hargis said. "It's a credit to their hard work and dedication to their school work and their swimming and diving to receive this recognition, and they each deserve this award for the tremendous way they represent our program at Pitt."
The CSCAA's selections recognized student-athletes from across the country who achieved at least a 3.50 grade point average in the spring semester. First team awards were given to NCAA qualifiers with the requisite GPA, while Honorable Mention designations were presented to those who competed at a regional or conference meet for their school.
