PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's gymnastics team returned home Friday evening to take on North Carolina in their third home meet of the season, dropping a tightly contested contest to their EAGL rivals.
The Panthers (2-3, 0-2 EAGL) were edged by the Tar Heels (2-3, 1-1 EAGL) by a score of 194.925-194.450, as North Carolina came back in the final two rotations to earn the victory.
"We knew that it was going to be a close meet," head coach Debbie Yohman said. "We're really disappointed that we didn't come out on top. I have to be happy [though] because after what happened to start our meet last week, we really recovered well from that."
Pitt's score of 194.450 was the teams highest total so far this year.
VAULT
The Panthers began the evening on vault where they posted a team score of 48.550, their second highest score of the season. Tracey Pearson took home first place in the event by tying her career-high in the event with a score of 9.875. Meagan Oscar finished in fourth with a score of 9.825, surpassing her career-high.
BARS
Pitt posted a team score of 48.650 on bars and captured the first a second individual spots on the event. Taylor Laymon took home another bars title by posting a 9.825. Dani Hall and Lucy Brett weren't far behind, as they tied for second place in the event with a score of 9.800, both career-highs for the silver medalists.
BEAM
Continuing a stellar individual performance, Lucy Brett led the way for the Panthers and took home a share of the title with a career-high score of 9.900. Lucy Jones and Brittany West tied for fifth place as they each posted a 9.800. Pitt earned a team score of 48.075 on beam, their highest of the season.
FLOOR
Floor was the Panthers' best event on the day, as they posted a team score of 49.175, their highest score of the season. Pearson took home her second title of the day by notching a score of 9.900. Laymon finished in third with a score of 9.850, while Hall and Alecia Petrikis tied for fifth in the event with a 9.825.
UP NEXT
The Panthers hit the road for the entire month of February, with their first stop being in Philadelphia to participate in a quad-meet with host Temple, West Chester and Ursinus. Pitt will then be on the road for the following three meets before returning home to host a quad-meet of their own on March 3rd.
