PITTSBURGH – The 24th-ranked Pitt wrestling team dropped a 20-16 decision to ACC-foe North Carolina Saturday night in the Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers took five bouts from the Tar Heels, including one with bonus points thanks to sophomore 165-pounder TeShan Campbell.
Sophomore LJ Bentley got the dual started at 125 pounds with a 9-3 decision over North Carolina's James Szymanski. Bentley wasted no time at all, taking down Szymanski within the first few seconds of the bout. He used two more takedowns, an escape and added on a point after two stall warnings and riding time to secure the Panthers' first win of the night.
At 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani earned his 16th win on the season after a thrilling 8-4 decision over Joey Moon. Rahmani jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on in the first period with a takedown and four point nearfall. He reversed Moon in the second period and would hold him off for the win.
Continuing his winning ways at 165 pounds, sophomore TeShan Campbell picked up a 9-1 major decision. Like Rahmani, Campbell also jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period over John Clark. He cruised the rest of the way with an escape, stall warning point and riding time en route to the victory.
Redshirt sophomore Zach Bruce picked up the fourth Pitt win of the day as he won in an 8-3 decision over Anderson Pope. Bruce used four takedowns to collect the dual win.
The final win of the night came after redshirt junior Ryan Solomon won in sudden victory over Cory Daniel. His Tar Heel opponent took him down first, but Solomon quickly reversed him to tie it 2-2. With Solomon starting in the down position entering the second, Solomon escaped, regaining the lead 3-2. Daniel escaped off bottom early on in the third, tying the match 3-3. In sudden victory, Solomon and Daniel rolled towards out of bounds and Daniels was hit with his second stall warning, giving Solomon a point and the win.
