Swimming Sweeps Weekly Awards
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Valerie Daigneault and Armin Remenyi were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Daigneault, a sophomore, triumphed in three events and was the Panthers' top swimmer in four individual events over the weekend, leading her team to a sweep of the Rutgers Penta. The Mont-Royal, Quebec, native won the 100 back (55.16), 200 IM (2:02.69) and 200 back (1:58.82), posting an NCAA B-cut time in the final event and scoring huge team points as the Panthers defeated host Rutgers along with Big East foes Georgetown, Seton Hall and Villanova in dual meets. Daigneault was also Pitt's top finisher in the 100 fly (56.50) as she finished fifth overall in that event.
Remenyi, a freshman, dominated the Rutgers Penta meet over the weekend with his incredible versatility, winning three individual events and placing second in another. A 2016 Olympian for Hungary, Remenyi started the meet by cruising to victory in the 1,000 free on Friday in 9:18.96 and took second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.92. On Saturday, the Nyiregyhaza, Hungary, native switched to a sprinter's mindset and remarkably won the 100 free (45.87) and 100 fly (50.28), which helped propel the Panthers to comfortable dual meet wins over Big East foes Georgetown, Seton Hall and Villanova.
Up next for Pitt swimming and diving is the Ohio State Invitational, held Nov. 17-19 at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
