UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Pitt tennis team dropped its first road dual of the season at Penn State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Sarni Tennis Center.
Sophomore Gabriela Rezende, senior Audrey Ann Blakely and redshirt senior Amber Washington all turned in singles victories on the day.
"I am really proud of this team," head coach Alex Santos said. "Unfortunately today we weren't able to get the outcome we were looking for, but we left the courts with no regrets in terms of our fight and ambition. We overcame a tough start in doubles to play with such confidence and poise in singles. We all wanted to win but this moment will make us want it even more and keep progressing as a program."
The Panthers fell behind early, dropping the doubles point as both teams fell in a 6-3 decision on courts two and three.
A straight-set win from Rezende on three, 6-4, 6-2, tied the dual 1-1. Soon after, Blakely claimed a hard-fought battle, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 2 singles to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the dual. Washington recorded the third and final win for the Panthers at No. 1 singles as she outlasted No. 81 Katia Blik at the No. 1 position, 7-6, 7-6.
Junior Callie Frey put up a hard fight with her Penn State opponent, but it wouldn't be enough as she fell 6-1, 2-6, 5-7.
Freshman Jovana Knezevic and sophomore Clara Lucas also dropped their matches at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
With the loss, Pitt moves to 2-2 overall on the year.
The Panthers continue their road tour as they travel to ACC-foe Louisville Saturday, Feb. 25 for a 1:30 p.m. dual.
