PITTSBURGH - Sophomore forward Kalista Walters led Pitt women's basketball (12-12, 3-8 ACC) with 14 points as the Panthers fell to Clemson (14-11, 3-9 ACC), 54-46, Thursday night at Petersen Events Center.
Walters added seven rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal to her final line. Sophomore Brenna Wise and freshman Alayna Gribble had seven points apiece, while Wise was the team's leading rebounder with eight.
The Tigers led by as many as six in the first quarter (8-2), following a 6-0 run that lasted until the 6:02 mark. Pitt cut the deficit to one point four different times, and eventually erased it when Gribble hit a free throw with under a minute remaining (16-16). She ended the first period with seven points, hitting two from long range.
The second quarter was slow, as both teams combined to score 13 points. The Panthers trailed by as many as three, but eventually overtook the lead (22-20) at the 3:39 mark after Walters scored her eight point of the game. Despite holding the Tigers to a scoreless streak from 5:35 to 1:12, Pitt trailed by one (23-22) entering the locker room at halftime. The Panthers' six points scored in the second were the fewest of any quarter this season.
Pitt went without a field goal from the 3:39 mark in the second until 6:31 in the third. Clemson opened the second half on a 9-2 run to reach an eight-point lead (32-24), but the Panthers answered with four consecutive points to cut the margin in half. In total, Pitt was outscored 16-8 in the quarter and started the final period with a nine-point hurdle, down 39-30.
Destinie Gibbs hit a jumper and Jasmine Whitney sunk two free throws to make it a five-point game at the 9:17 mark, but the Tigers quickly responded and pushed the margin back to nine points (43-34) over the next two minutes. There were signs of life in the Panthers, as the team went on an 8-2 run lasting until 4:35 to put Pitt within three points, down 45-42, and again, 47-44, with 3:25 to go.
However, the Panthers could not come any closer as the Tigers made seven out of eight free throws to end the game, and Pitt went 1-of-5 from the field, 0-of-3 from 3-point range.
