Pitt Gymnastics Places 5th in EAGL Championship

RALEIGH, N.C.— The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team competed in the 2017 EAGL Championship and placed fifth in the six-team meet after finishing with a team score of 194.100.
Pitt (9-19, 2-9 EAGL) fell to George Washington (1st, 196.275), New Hampshire (2nd, 195.075), N.C. State (3rd, 194.875) and North Carolina (4th, 194.525) while topping Towson (6th, 193.225).
The Panthers had quality showings on beam and vault, led by sophomore Brittany West and senior Tracey Pearson, respectively. West scored a 9.900 on beam, topping her career high and tying for a share of the title in the event. Pearson produced a 9.850 on vault to finish second in the event.
FLOOR
After beginning the meet serving a bye, the Panthers began on floor. Sophomore Charli Spivey posted a 9.800 to lead off for Pitt, which supplanted her career-high. Pearson also scored a 9.800 in her electric routine. Junior Dani Hall earned a 9.775 and freshman Alecia Petrikis scored a 9.675. Pitt's total on the floor exercise was 48.500.
Spivey and Pearson both tied for 13th on floor, while Hall finished 19th in the exercise.
VAULT
The Panthers then took to vault for the third rotation. Pearson paced the Panthers with a 9.850, while sophomore Meagan Oscar posted a 9.800. West garnered a 9.775 on vault, tying her career-high. Freshman Deven Herbine earned a 9.775 while sophomore Krista Collins scored a 9.700. The Panthers showing of 48.875 on vault is their second-highest this season.
Pearson highlighted Pitt's performance on vault, notching a 9.850. The score earned her a second-place finish in the event, while Oscar's 9.800 tied for 5th. West's showing of 9.775 tied her for 7th, while Herbine tied for 13th.
BARS
Pitt performed on uneven bars for the fifth rotation, coming off a bye. Sophomore Lucy Brett picked up the Panthers best score in the event with a 9.800. Junior Taylor Laymon produced a 9.750, while Hall and freshman Hallie Peele both scored 9.600. Pitt's total on bars was 48.100.
Brett, a native of North Somerset, U.K., tied for 4th on uneven bars, while Laymon tied for 10th in the event.
BEAM
Pitt concluded the 2017 EAGL Championship on beam. West had a superb beam routine that netted her a 9.900. West, a native of Clermont, Fla., eclipsed her career high with the score. Brett scored a 9.850 and senior Kelly Burak earned a 9.725. Collins chimed in with a 9.750, tying her career-high, to help Pitt to a 48.575 on beam, their second-highest total on the season.
West earned a share of the title on beam with her performance of 9.900. It marks the third straight year that a Pitt gymnast has come away with the title on beam in the EAGL Tournament, after Lindsay Offutt won the title in both 2015 and 2016. Brett placed tied for 8th for Pitt with her score of 9.850.
