Pitt Closes Out 2018 Home Schedule
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team wrapped up the home portion of the 2018 regular season Sunday afternoon, falling to Notre Dame 2-0 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Pitt celebrated Senior Day prior to the match, honoring Clare Beahn, Alli Higgs, Ashley Moreira, Taylor Pryce, Mikayla Schmidt and Bel van Noorden as well as manager Ian Troost.
"I think that at end, when you look at things statistically and you look at the chances we had and the differences, they scored on a couple opportunities and we didn't," said head coach Randy Waldrum. "We had enough good looks today to have gotten something out of the game, some kind of result out of it, so I was just really proud of the effort. That was probably one of the best performances in the conference this season, so good way to finish at home."
Notre Dame (8-9-0, 4-5-0 ACC) took a 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute, holding that lead through the first into halftime. The Fighting Irish would add to their lead early in the second half, making it 2-0.
Despite a multitude of strong chances from Pitt (4-11-1, 0-9-0 ACC) in the second period, the Panthers were unable to chip away at the deficit, falling 2-0.
Notre Dame edged the Panthers in shots, 16-14, as Pitt tallied its most shots in ACC play on the season. The Panthers were led by Pryce, Anna Rico and Aideen O'Donoghue, who each recorded three shots apiece. All three of O'Donoghue's shots were on goal as the sophomore got some good looks but was unable to find the back of the net.
Freshman keeper Katherine Robinson was strong in net, making five saves, including a few crucial stops to keep the Panthers in it.
The Panthers will conclude the regular season Thursday at No. 11 Boston College, kicking off with the Eagles at 7 p.m.
