Four Panthers Finish in Double-Digit Scoring
NASHVILLE – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team dominated Tennessee State, 78-56, Sunday night in the final day of the Challenge in Music City at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 4-4 on the year. Tennessee State remains winless at 0-7 overall.
At the conclusion of the game, senior forward Danielle Garven was named to the All-Tournament Team following a season-best 17-point effort while recording 44 points through the three games.
Pitt's shots were falling tonight as the squad finished shooting 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from beyond the arc. The stellar long-range effort was led by senior Cassidy Walsh and sophomore Kyla Nelson, who both knocked down three apiece. Nelson finished a perfect 3-of-3 from three.
"I'm proud of our effort and energy today," said head coach Lance White. "Our players did what they needed to get us the win."
The Panthers used four three's to lead 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. Walsh finished with six points off 2-of-4 shooting from behind the arc, while Whitney and Nelson both drained three's of their own.
Pitt continued its scoring ways in the second, putting up 23 points and shooting 76.9 percent from the field (10-of-13). Garven, who recorded nine through the 10 minutes, led the Panthers' scoring surge as they headed to the locker room with a 41-21 lead.
Another 20-point quarter would give Pitt a 61-38 advantage after three quarters of play. Half of the Panthers' third-quarter points came from the free throw line as the team went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Pitt reached its largest lead of the night in the fourth quarter, going ahead by 25 points with 7:06 to go. Although securing the win, Tennessee State outscored the Panthers 18-17 in the final frame. However, the Tigers were unable to battle back as Pitt went on a 5-3 run over the final two minutes of action en route to the victory.
The Panthers resume action Thursday, Nov. 29 when they travel to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at 8 p.m.
