The Opening Tip
• Pitt returns to action Friday, Nov. 9 with a 7 p.m. tipoff against VMI at the Petersen Events Center.
• The Panthers opened the season with a 69-53 win over Youngstown State Tuesday. Pitt will play five games in the opening 12 days of the season.
• Head coach Jeff Capel saw 60 of the team's 69 points in the opener scored by players donning the Pitt jersey for the first time in their careers. All four double-figure scorers - Trey McGowens (17), Xavier Johnson (16), Malik Ellison (13) and Au'Diese Toney (12) - played in their first game as a Panther.
• Pitt is 8-0 all-time against teams currently in the Southern Conference, including a 97-70 win over VMI Dec. 6, 2011 in the only other meeting between the two schools.
• Pitt owns a 143-7 (.953) all-time record at the Petersen Events Center in non-conference games. The Panthers' 241 home wins overall since the start of the 2002-03 season ranks fifth-most in the NCAA in that span.
• The Panthers have won eight consecutive home games against unranked non-conference opponents.

• The Panthers started freshmen Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Au'Diese Toney in the season opener, marking the first time in program history three freshmen have opened the season in the starting lineup. Freshmen combined to make 102 starts for Pitt last season.
• Jeff Capel has guided his teams to a 102-28 (.785) home record during his coaching career. His teams have won 11 or more home contests in each of his nine seasons as a head coach.
• The Panthers return 53.4 percent (1,059-of-1,985) of its scoring from a year ago with Jared Wilson-Frame (416) and Shamiel Stevenson (273) accounting for a bulk of those points. Newcomers accounted for 60 of the team's 69 points in the season opener.
• Pitt took five charges against Youngstown State with Kene Chukwuka and Xavier Johnson each drawing a pair of offensive fouls in the season opener. The Panthers drew just 15 offensive fouls a season ago.
• Pitt's freshmen class of Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Au'Diese Toney is off to a strong start averaging 36.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 5.0 steals per game through Pitt's exhibition game and season opener.
• Kene Chukwuka started the second half of the Youngstown State game and made a significant impact with seven points and three rebounds. He finished the night with a career high matching eight boards.
• Jared Wilson-Frame ranks 11th among the ACC leading returning scorers after averaging 13.0 points per game a year ago. His 74 three-point field goals in 2017-18 ranks sixth among returning players in the ACC. Wilson-Frame was sidelined for the season opener due to a violation of team rules.
• Malik Ellison went 6-of-10 from the field and finished with 13 points and six rebounds in his first live game action since March 9, 2017. He averaged 7.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 57 career games (35 starts) at St. John's prior to transferring to Pitt.
• Pitt shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24) from the field in the second half of play in the season opener. The Panthers made 14-of-20 field goal attempts to start the half and led by as many as 24 points in the second half of play.
• Pitt registered 27 fast break points in the season opener against Youngstown State, the most by the team in the past six seasons.
• The Panthers limited Youngstown State to 26.9 percent (18-of-67) shooting from the field in the season opener. Jeff Capel-led teams are now 93-10 when holding the opposition below 40 percent shooting from the field, including a 16-0 mark when opponents shoot below 30 percent from the field.
• Pitt aggressively attacked the rim against Youngstown State, finishing with 48 points in the paint. The Panthers also got to the free throw line 22 times in the contest.
• Pitt has an ACC-high five international players - Kene Chukwuka, Samson George, Peace Ilegomah, Sidy N'Dir and Shamiel Stevenson - on the roster. Wake Forest and Virginia each have four international players on its rosters.
