Pitt Posts Second Highest Score in Program History on Senior Day

Panthers Earn a 196.475 En Route to a Second Place Finish at Home Quad Meet.
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team recorded the second-best score in program history en route to a second place finish at its home quad meet against Penn State, Temple and West Virginia Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers team score of 196.475 ranks second all-time, trailing only the 196.525 set by the 2004 Pitt squad. Pitt also vaulted into the record books in multiple events. The team's 49.175 on vault ranks second all-time, while their 49.100 on beam is tied for the fourth best mark in program history and their 49.075 on bars ranks eighth all-time.
Individually, freshman Haley Brechwald earned a season-high all-around score of 39.375, which is tied for the fourth highest mark in program history. Brechwald also earned Pitt's lone individual event title in the meet, scoring a season-high 9.875 on beam.
VAULT
The Panthers started the day on vault, where junior Kensleigh Owens led the team with career-high 9.875. Brechwald followed Owens with a season-high tying 9.850. Sophomore's Alecia Petrikis and Deven Herbine both earned a 9.825 in the event, with the score tying a career-high for Herbine. Junior Charli Spivey rounded out the group with a career-high tying 9.800.
Pitt held the top spot after the first rotation with a 49.175. Penn State trailed closely behind with a 49.100, followed by West Virginia at 48.825 and Temple with a 48.625.
BARS
Pitt moved to bars in the second rotation, where senior Catie Conrad earned a season-high tying 9.875 to lead the Panthers. Sophomore Lucy Jones followed with a career-high mark of 9.850. Senior Taylor Laymon earned a 9.800, followed by Brechwald and junior Lucy Brett, who each scored a 9.775.
The Panthers held onto their lead after the second rotation, earning a 98.250 through two events. The Nittany Lions sat in second place with a 98.075, followed by the Moutaineers at 98.050 and the Owls with a 97.600.
BEAM
Next up for the Panthers was beam, where Brechwald earned her individual title with a season-high 9.875. Conrad and Herbine followed with a 9.825, with the mark setting a career-high for Herbine. Brett earned a 9.800 in the event, followed by Jones with a 9.775.
After three rotations, Pitt and Penn State were tied for the top spot with a 147.350, followed by West Virginia at 147.250 and Temple with a 146.025.
FLOOR
Pitt closed the meet on floor, where Brechwald earned her second-consecutive 9.875 of the day. Following Brechwald was Owens and Spivey at 9.825, which tied the duo's career-high in the event. Petrikis and Conrad followed with a 9.800, with the score marking a season-high for Conrad.
The Nittany Lions pulled ahead in the final rotation, finishing in first place with a 196.650. The Panthers placed second with a 196.475, followed by the Mountaineers at 196.075 and Temple with a 194.250.
