Panthers Capture Third Straight Win to Open Russmatt Invite
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – An eighth inning RBI double off the bat of David Yanni plated the lone run of the Panthers' opening game of the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational as the University of Pittsburgh baseball team captured a 1-0 victory over Hofstra at Osceola County Stadium.
Pitt (4-3, 0-0 ACC) used solid pitching performances from a trio of newcomers, in addition to reliever Chase Smith, and clutch hitting to capture its third consecutive victory.
"Great pitching and defense will always keep you in a ballgame," said head coach Mike Bell. "It was great to see the young arms situationally pitch through some jams, and we played great defense. You can win a lot of games with a zeros at the end of a line score [zero errors]."
Senior Cole MacLaren would lead off the eighth inning with a four-pitch walk, before a pop up would give the Pride their first out of the inning. After a lefty-matchup pitching change, Yanni would connect on his second double of the game, scoring MacLaren to put the Panthers on top.
"It was a clutch hit by Yanni driving the ball into left center off the lefty late in the game," added Bell. "We built some innings early and will continue to work on cashing them in for more insurance."
Pitching dominated the contest for both sides, as Yanni's RBI plated the lone run of the game. Pitt would manage eight hits in the contest, with the only two extra base hits coming via Yanni doubles.
Starter Christian Camacho set the tone early, retiring eight of the 11 batters he faced, allowing two runs and one walk, striking out four in 3.0 innings. Freshman Billy Corcoran would throw 2.0 innings of relief, letting up just one hit and one walk, striking out a pair, while fellow rookie Brady Devereux tossed 2.2 frames, letting up two hits, striking out a career-best five betters.
Smith (1-0) would enter with runners on the corners and two outs in the eighth, getting the Panthers out of the jam, before striking out the side in the ninth to secure his first win of the season.
The Panthers return to action Saturday for a pair of games at Osceola County Stadium, taking on Saint Peter's at 11 a.m. before returning to face Butler at 6:30 p.m.
