Pitching Dazzles as Panthers Capture First ACC Win of 2019
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team captured its first ACC win of the season Sunday afternoon, downing Coastal Division foe Virginia Tech 1-0 at Charles L. Cost Field.
In a defensive dual, the Panthers (7-11, 1-5 ACC) used a lone run in the fourth inning to secure their first ACC victory of the season and the first career league win for first-year head coach Mike Bell.
"As we continue to grow as a team and a program, we continue to talk about having mental toughness," said Bell. "Today, our young Panthers showed a lot of mental toughness, after a couple of tough losses, and they went out and earned an ACC victory."
The Panthers broke open the stalemate in the fourth inning, scoring the game's only run. A walk to Connor Perry put the leadoff man on, as a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt from Cole MacLaren would move Perry into scoring position. Ron Washington Jr. would single up the middle to put runners on the corners before an RBI ground out by David Yanni allowed Perry to score and gave the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
Pitching set the tone, as the Panthers relied heavily on freshman Billy Corcoran (1-2), who earned his first career victory in a stellar relief performance. The rookie tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, letting up just two hits and one walk, striking out three.
Junior Christian Camacho earned the start, going one inning, letting up a pair of hits and fanning two. Brady Devereux would toss a clean second inning, walking one and striking out one. David Moore appeared in the third, holding the Hokies to just one walk.
Closer Chase Smith earned his second save of the season, recording the final two outs in dramatic fashion, getting the final man to chase and secure the Panther victory.
Offensively, Pitt tallied just three hits, with knocks coming from Perry, Washington Jr. and Nico Popa.
Pitt closes out its eight-game homestand Wednesday, hosting Kent State in a regional, non-conference battle. The Panthers hit the road the following weekend, traveling to ACC powerhouse Virginia for a three-game series.
