Pitt Returns to Action Wednesday at Youngstown State
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team concluded a three-game series at ACC Coastal Division foe Virginia Sunday afternoon, falling in the contest, 5-2, at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.
"It was a really good ball game by both teams today, decided by one or two key pitches," said head coach Mike Bell. "I was really proud of our fight and toughness today."
The Panthers struck first, as the third homer of the season from David Yanni gave the Panthers a 1-0 advantage in the second. The Cavaliers would respond in the bottom of the frame, working some small ball to tie things up.
A solo homer for the Cavaliers in the sixth would give the home team its first advantage of the afternoon.
Pitt freshman Gregory Ryan Jr. launched his first career home run into left center on the first pitch of the seventh inning as the Panthers would knot the contest up.
The home run trend would continue in the seventh, as a three-run shot for the Cavaliers gave Virginia a 5-2 advantage.
Starter Derek West put together a solid performance in his first ACC start of the season, going 5.0 innings, allowing two runs off four hits and two walks, fanning six. Christian Camacho (1-3) earned the decision, allowing three runs off two hits and two walks. Freshman Billy Corcoran tossed 1.2 innings of relief, holding the Cavaliers hitless.
Offensively, the homers from Yanni and Ryan Jr. marked the only runs of the game for the Panthers. Ron Washington Jr. extended his team-best reached base streak to 20 games with a single in the sixth inning. Connor Perry stayed hot, going 1-3 with a walk to wrap up the weekend 5-10 with three homers, four RBI and three walks.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday, traveling to Youngstown State for the second of three mid-week games against the Penguins this season. Pitt gets back to ACC play the following weekend, hosting Miami in a three-game set at Charles L. Cost Field.
