Panthers Return to Action This Weekend Against Miami
NILES, Ohio – An infield single in the 10th inning lifted Youngstown State to a walk-off win over the University of Pittsburgh baseball team Wednesday evening, as the Panthers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Penguins at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio.
Pitt manufactured a pair of runs early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second frame. A leadoff single from David Yanni, followed by a walk to Bryce O'Farrell would put a pair on, as a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Yanni would come around to score on the second wild pitch of the inning, as a groundout scored O'Farrell and put the Panthers on top.
The Penguins would tie things up in the fourth on a two-run homer to left field.
The pitchers would take control of the game for the final five frames, as both teams were held off the board. Pitt managed to load things up in the ninth after a one-out walk to Cole MacLaren, a double from Connor Perry and an intentional walk issued to Yanni. A fielder's choice would end the threat as Pitt found itself headed to extras for just the second time this season.
A leadoff single got things going for the Penguins in the bottom of the 10th as Dan Hammer collected back-to-back strikeouts to ring up a pair. After a stolen base put a runner in scoring position, a hard hit infield single allowed the runner to score, as Youngstown State captured the victory.
Hammer (2-3) earned the loss, allowing one run in 1.0 innings, letting up two hits and striking out a pair. Starter Billy Corcoran went 1.0 inning without allowing a hit, while Brady Devereux and William Kirwan each pitched 2.1 innings of relief. David Moore tallied a strikeout in the sixth as he entered with two on and two outs. Chase Smith threw an impressive 3.0 innings of work, letting up just two hits and fanning three.
Offensively, the Panthers recorded 10 hits on the evening, as MacLaren, Perry, Ron Washington Jr. and Sky Duff each collected a pair. Washington Jr. extended his team-best reached base streak to 21 games as he and Perry each tallied a double in the outing.
The Panthers return to action this weekend, hosting ACC Coastal Division counterpart Miami in a three-game slate at Charles L. Cost Field. The Panthers and Hurricanes kick things off Friday at 6 p.m., as the series continues Saturday at 3 p.m. and comes to an end Sunday at 1 p.m.
