Gomez Tosses Career-Best 6.0 Innings in Defeat
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell in the finale of the weekend series with ACC Coastal Division foe Miami Sunday afternoon, dropping a 5-3 decision at Charles L. Cost Field.
"I'm really proud of the fight that our guys showed, not only today, but all weekend," said head coach Mike Bell. "We knew today was going to be a game that was going to be a fight down to the wire. You had a series on the line, two teams competing for that series, and runs were going to be hard to come by. I felt like we gave away some extra opportunities early on, which was probably the difference in the game. You can tip your cap to Miami, they did a good job of getting it done late. We put ourselves in position with the bases loaded at the end and we need to do a better job of finishing off those opportunities."
The Panthers (8-18, 2-10 ACC) succumbed to an early deficit, as a first inning error allowed Miami to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Pitt would get one back in the bottom of the third, cutting the Miami lead to two. After back-to-back walks to Andres Antonini and Gregory Ryan Jr. put a pair on, Sky Duff would tally an RBI single into center, scoring Antonini for the Panthers' first run of the game.
Miami would regain the three-run advantage with a run in the fourth.
The Panthers kept the pressure on, scoring two in the seventh to pull within one. Nico Popa got the inning going with an infield single, taking second when Bryce O'Farrell was struck by a pitch. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before Ryan Jr. would load things up after being hit by a pitch. In the next at bat, a fielding error would allow Duff to reach, scoring both Popa and O'Farrell.
The Hurricanes would again respond in the eighth, getting one back to take back the two-run advantage.
Pitt kept things interesting in the ninth, as Kyle Hess got things started with a one-out single into the outfield. Pinch runner Luca Lotito would move to second, as a single from Duff put a pair on and caused Miami to make a pitching change. Cole MacLaren would load things up, drawing a full-count walk, but Miami would get out of the jam and hold on for the victory.
Offensively, Duff and Popa put together two-hit performances, as Pitt tallied seven hats on the afternoon. Duff recorded the Panthers' only RBI, while Ron Washington Jr. extended his team-best reached base streak to 24 games.
Starter Billy Corcoran (1-3) earned the loss, allowing three unearned runs off two hits and one strikeout. Chris Gomez was strong in relief, letting up two runs off six hits and no walks, striking out four in a career-long 6.0 innings. Chase Smith tossed the final 2.0 frames, letting up two hits and striking out one.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday, traveling to rival West Virginia for a 6:35 p.m. matchup in Granville, W.Va.
