Panthers Return to Action This Weekend at Duke
GRANVILLE, W.Va. – A sacrifice fly in the eighth inning proved the difference Wednesday evening as the University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell to West Virginia, 5-4, at Monongalia County Ballpark in Granville, W.Va.
The home team was able to score the winning run on a fly ball in the bottom of the eighth, capturing the first of two Backyard Brawls scheduled on the season.
Pitt jumped out to the lead in the second when Andres Antonini dropped a single into shallow left field, plating Nico Popa, who had reached after back-to-back hit by pitches. West Virginia would respond in the bottom of the frame, scoring four to take a three-run lead.
The Panthers shocked the crowd at Monongalia County Ballpark in the sixth, when sophomore Bryce O'Farrell connected on his first career home run, a three-run shot to left field that tied things up.
The sacrifice fly would plate the final run of the game in the eighth as West Virginia earned the victory.
O'Farrell's three RBI performance led the way for the Panthers, as Pitt managed just three hits with O'Farrell, Antonini and Gregory Ryan Jr. tallying the Panthers' only knocks.
Pitt returns to action this weekend, traveling to Durham, N.C., for a three-game slate with the Duke Blue Devils. Action is set to get underway Friday at 6 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
