Pitt Returns to Action Sunday in Series Finale
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell in a pair of tightly contested outings, as Duke captured a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils opened the afternoon with a 2-0 victory in the first game, moving on to mount an eighth inning comeback in game two to secure a 6-5 win and the series victory.
Game One
Despite a strong start from redshirt junior Derek West, the Panthers dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 2-0. The shutout marked the first time this season that the Panthers were shutout.
Duke got on the board in the third on an RBI single up the middle gave the home team a 1-0 advantage. The Blue Devils would extend the lead in the sixth, after an infield single and a triple plated a run and put things at a 2-0 advantage for Duke.
Pitt was unable to put any runs on the board, being held to just two hits on the afternoon, coming off the bats of Ron Washington Jr. and Bryce O'Farrell.
West (0-2) tossed 6.0 frames, allowing two runs off eight hits and just one walk, striking out a career-best eight batters. Brady Devereux threw a nice inning, allowing just one hit and striking out one. David Moore wrapped things up, throwing an inning with one hit and one strikeout.
Game Two
Duke secured the early advantage in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead through four innings.
The Panthers used a big fifth inning to take a three-run advantage, plating five runs in the frame. After back-to-back singles from Sky Duff and Andres Antonini, followed by a walk to Cole MacLaren, loaded things up, an error would allow Luca Lotito to reach, scoring both Duff and Antonini to tie things up.
After a pair of outs, an infield single by Washington Jr. loaded things up once again, as the Panthers would draw three straight walks to bring three more home, taking the 5-2 lead.
Duke would score single runs in the fifth and the seventh to cut the lead to one, before regaining the lead in the eighth off a two-run homer.
David Yanni would lead off the top of the ninth with a double into the right field corner, moving to third on a wild pitch, but the Panthers were unable to bring him home as Duke held on for the victory.
Freshman Billy Corcoran was strong in his fourth start of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits and four walks, striking out four. Devereux and Chase Smith (1-3) also saw work out of the pen.
