Pitt Drops 4-3 Decision to Unbeaten Wolfpack
RALEIGH, N.C. – The seventh inning proved the difference in the University of Pittsburgh baseball team's ACC opener, as the Panthers dropped a 4-3 decision to undefeated and 20th-ranked NC State.
Pitt (6-5, 0-1 ACC) used strong pitching performances to hold with the Wolfpack (13-0, 1-0 ACC) after the home team grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. The Panthers would plate a pair in the sixth to take their first lead of the game, extending the advantage to two runs in the seventh, before the bottom of the inning proved to be the game's deciding factor.
"Overall it was a well-played game," said head coach Mike Bell. "Good teams will take advantage when you give them extra outs and that's what NC State did in the bottom of the seventh. I thought our guys showed a lot of fight today, we just didn't finish what we started."
In the sixth, trailing by one, Ron Washington Jr. got the inning going with his eighth double of the season. Nico Popa would bring him around with a single into center field, tying the game. The Panthers would take the lead for the first time in the outing in the next at bat, as freshman Kyle Hess bounced a triple off the wall in center, plating Popa and giving Pitt a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers would make it 3-1 in the seventh when a bases loaded wild pitch allowed Connor Perry to score.
The undefeated Wolfpack, however, would respond, scoring three in the bottom of the seventh to regain the advantage.
Junior David Moore (1-1) earned a tough loss, finishing his outing without giving up a hit or a walk, hitting a man and striking out one, letting up one unearned run. Starter Christian Camacho went 2.0 innings, allowing one run off one hit and two walks, fanning a pair. Freshman Billy Corcoran was stellar in his 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Brady Devereux tossed 2.0 innings of work, letting up two runs off two hits and two walks, fanning three. Chase Smith would toss the final two outs of the game, striking out both batters he faced.
Offensively, both Popa and Hess recorded an RBI, while Washington Jr. went 2-3 with a run scored and a walk. Pitt tallied six hits and drew three walks, out-hitting NC State, who wrapped up the game with five hits.
The Panthers and Wolfpack return to action tomorrow for the second game of the weekend, with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
