Panthers Fall in Series Finale with Notre Dame

Pitt Resumes Action Next Weekend vs. Presbyterian
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped its weekend series with Notre Dame, falling in the conclusion of a suspended game two before dropping the series finale Sunday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field.
Game Two
Notre Dame plated one in the third and fourth frames to take a 2-0 advantage in game two, before a five-run fifth inning gave the visitor's a 7-0 lead. The Fighting Irish would extend their advantage in the sixth and seventh with one-run frames, taking a 9-0 lead before inclement weather forced the game to be postponed.
The Panthers and Fighting Irish picked things up Sunday afternoon, as Notre Dame held on for the victory.
Dan Hammer (2-5) earned the loss, allowing eight runs (six earned) off 11 hits and two walks, striking out five in 6.0 frames. Chris Gomez threw an inning of relief, allowing one run off three hits, striking out two. David Moore tossed a clean inning, striking out three, while Mason Ronan whiffed a pair in the ninth.
Offensively, the Panthers collected seven hits, with Nico Popa leading the way with two. Sky Duff, Bryce O'Farrell, Ron Washington Jr., Cole MacLaren and Zach Klapak each collected one.
Game Three
In a slow offensive performance for both teams, Notre Dame secured the series in a 4-1 victory in the finale.
Pitt got on the board first, scoring a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Popa would rip a one-out single up the middle, stealing second before a two-out RBI single to center off the bat MacLaren gave Pitt the lead.
Notre Dame responded, tying things up in the top of the third on a solo homer.
The Fighting Irish extended their advantage with a two-run fifth and a lone run in the sixth, holding on for a 4-1 victory.
Starter Billy Corcoran (1-5) tossed 6.0 frames, allowing four runs off four hits and three walks, striking out three. Brady Devereux tossed 1.1 innings, walking three and striking out one. Chase Smith wrapped things up, throwing 1.2 innings without letting up a hit, striking out one.
The Panthers continue their homestand next weekend, hosting Presbyterian in a three-game, two-day non-conference series. Things get underway Friday at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.
