Sophomore Pitcher, Panther Defense Blanks Hawks in Series Openers
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team captured a series-opening victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Tuesday night, earning an 11-0 win over the Hawks at Charles L. Cost Field.
Sophomore Chris Cappas put together a masterful performance, going seven scoreless, letting up just four hits and one walk, collecting a career-best eight strikeouts to lead the Panthers to the shutout win.
"I'm really proud of our team's effort. It all started with our pitching and defense," said head coach Mike Bell. "There's no doubt the story of the game was Chris [Cappas], going seven strong innings and no errors from our defense. His ability to locate three pitches for strikes and pitch ahead in the count led him to a phenomenal job on the mound.
"Offensively, I thought we had some really good at bats early on. Nico [Popa] continues to be hot in the middle of the order with a double and a home run and Kyle [Hess] had a big three-run homer in the first inning. But, up and down the lineup, we saw some quality at bats today and took the game in all three phases."
The Panthers got off to a strong start, posting five in the first frame to take a 5-0 lead. After a leadoff single from Sky Duff and a fielder's choice from Connor Perry put runners on the corners with one out, Nico Popa dropped a double into left, plating Duff to put Pitt up 1-0. A sacrifice fly by David Yanni would give Pitt a 2-0 advantage before Kyle Hess launched his second homer of the season to right to make it 5-0 in favor of the Panthers.
Pitt added to its lead in the second as a two-run shot from Popa gave the home team a 7-0 lead. The Panthers would make it 9-0 in the fifth. Popa got things started with an infield single, swiping second before a triple from Yanni plated the first run of the inning. Cole MacLaren would reach on an error in the field, plating Popa to extend the Pitt advantage.
The Panthers didn't let up, adding two more in the eighth. Zach Klapak would draw a leadoff walk, moving to second on a single from Andres Antonini. A fielding error loaded the bases before a wild pitch brought Klapak around. Perry would ground out to score Antonini as the Panthers secured an 11-0 victory.
Cappas was stellar in his seventh start of the season, facing the minimum through three, allowing just one extra base hit in his seven frames. David Moore closed things out, going two innings without letting up a hit, walking a pair and striking out the final batter of the contest.
Offensively, Popa was the highlight, continuing his hot streak, going 3-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Hess wrapped up the evening 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored as Pitt collected 11 hits in total.
The Panthers and Hawks will conclude the mid-week series Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. from Charles L. Cost Field.
